Tear drop tattoos

I thought that tear drop tattoos were only for prisoners that killed someone in prison. Then I heard it was for gang members to remember other dead gang members. Does anyone know what they stand for?

I heard from someone that if the tear drop is filled in it means you killed someone and got away free but if its not filled in it means you watched someone get killed

Ok, don't judge me... BUT, I know a guy, a good friend of mine, who has a tear drop tattoo under his eye. It represents his dad who was in prison and died. His is not colored in. Don't know of this helps. But, thought I'd add onto other thoughts.

In prison. I texted him to get more info before posting, but he didn't give me more details. He was killed in prison.

I never really knew the meaning either just knew it had something to do with death or prison so if I ever saw someone with it I would keep my mouth shut

I asked a guy at the airport one time what they meant and he told me they meant "Get away from me before I strangle you". I would have never guesses that
