Unfortunately, regretting a tattoo is all too common. Maybe your interests changed, or maybe your “Billy Bob” tattoo isn’t quite relevant anymore, or maybe you simply grew out of it. There are a lot of options out there to get rid of your tattoo—it just depends on how far, and how badly, you want it removed.
After speaking with makeup artists and dermatologists, here are a few ways to get rid of your tattoo temporarily — or permanently.
Fad Fix
One of the most popular creams, Tat B Gone, promises to remove your tattoo safely, pain-free and effectively. The website also advertises that, “there have been no reported negative side effects or adverse skin reactions [since the cream was released].”
However, Dr. Arnold R. Oppenheim reveals these allegations to be false in the RealSelf Tattoo Removal Cream Q&A.
“The ink from tattoos is embedded into the dermis, beyond the reach of any standard cream. Sure you might find a cream which has an acid base and if you search hard enough you might find one to penetrate to the dermis, but it would create a scar far uglier than the tattoo. Plus, its safety should be questioned.”
Make-up Fix
If you’d like to temporarily hide your tattoo, applying makeup over the area is a good way to proceed.
I spoke with celebrity makeup artist Joey Healy, who shared his go-to methods on how to use make-up for optimal tattoo cover-up. “To conceal a tattoo, Dermablend is the most general consumer product, and professionals in the film and TV industry use it to cover actors’ tattoos. Most normal liquid concealers won’t provide adequate coverage,” he says. “A heavier duty brand, Skin Illustrator, has a palette of colors that are rock hard and you have to use 99 percent undiluted rubbing alcohol to activate. It’s pretty serious stuff. After you activate it, you paint with it like an artist and it sets really quickly. It’s totally waterproof—you could go swimming with it on. I’ve used it to cover full sleeves of tattoos on models.”
But if you don’t have the resources to make movie magic, Joey suggests the following steps:
1. You need to find a normal foundation to match your skin tone, and a complementary foundation that will neutralize the tattoo.
2. First you will apply the corrective color on top of the tattoo, followed by the foundation.
3. You have to apply the complementary color on top of the tattoo to neutralize it. It’s sort of like painting your walls. Normal color wheel principles apply. You want to set with a powder to ensure longevity—something that ensures long wear.
4. After the tattoo is sufficiently covered with the base foundation, apply the powder to match your normal skin tone.
The steps are as follows: corrective color, foundation color, then powder to set.”
The latest technology in laser tattoo removal, PicoSure, was designed to be a more effective treatment with less scarring. The company’s website promises “greater disruption of the target for better clearance with fewer treatments, less fluence and without injury to the surrounding skin. Even dark, stubborn blue and green inks, as well as previously-treated, recalcitrant tattoos can be removed.” The treatment is also effective to remove other skin afflictions like freckles, moles, lentigo, and birthmarks.
